Collector Rights
Last Updated: January 2026
When you buy a tape on LIMITED, you're not renting—you're owning. This document explains exactly what that means.
1. What You Own
When you purchase a tape, you receive:
- A permanent license to listen to that specific track
- A unique copy number (e.g., #47 of 500) that is yours forever
- The right to trade or resell your copy on our marketplace
- Proof of ownership visible on your profile and collection
Your ownership is recorded in our database and cannot be revoked as long as you maintain your account in good standing.
2. Listening Rights
As an owner, you can:
- Stream your tape unlimited times through the LIMITED platform
- Listen on any device where you're logged in
- Access full quality audio (no previews or time limits)
- Listen offline through our mobile app (when available)
Note: For NEW artists (under 5,000 copies sold), only owners can listen to full tracks. This is part of our artist progression system—your early support helps artists unlock streaming for everyone.
3. Trading Rights
You can trade your tapes in two ways:
Swap Trading
Trade your tape 1:1 with another collector. No money changes hands—it's tape for tape. Both parties must agree to the trade.
Resale
List your tape for sale at the original purchase price only. We don't allow price markups. When your tape sells:
- You receive 90% of the sale price
- The artist receives 10% as a royalty
This ensures fair access for all collectors and continued support for artists.
4. Your Copy Number
Every tape has a unique copy number. Lower numbers are rarer and indicate earlier support.
- #1-10: Ultra-rare early supporter copies
- #1-100: Rare early copies
- #1-900: Founder tier (if release has 900+ copies)
Your copy number travels with the tape. If you trade or sell, the new owner gets your number. You'll receive a different number if you reacquire the tape.
5. Founder Status
If you purchase a tape during the Founder period (typically the first 900 copies), you receive a permanent FOUNDER badge on that specific tape.
- Founder badge stays with the copy forever
- Visible on your collection and marketplace listings
- Indicates you were an early supporter of that release
6. If an Artist Leaves the Platform
If an artist removes their music from LIMITED or their account is terminated:
- You keep your ownership record and copy number
- You keep your Founder status if applicable
- Streaming access may be affected depending on circumstances
- Trading remains available for existing owners
We believe ownership should be permanent. We're working on solutions to ensure listening access even in edge cases.
7. If the Platform Changes
We commit to:
- Data Portability: You can always export a record of your collection
- Advance Notice: 90 days minimum notice of any major changes
- Ownership Preservation: Your ownership records will be maintained
In the unlikely event LIMITED ceases operations, we will make every effort to either transfer your collection to a successor platform or provide alternative access to your purchased music.
8. What's NOT Included
To be clear, ownership does NOT include:
- Copyright or intellectual property rights to the music
- Rights to distribute, reproduce, or publicly perform the music
- Downloadable audio files
- Rights to use the music commercially or in content creation
- Access to unreleased or exclusive artist content
The music itself remains the intellectual property of the artist and their rights holders. Your ownership is a license to listen and trade within our ecosystem.
